Two M23 Rebels Sentenced to 2 years in Prison over Illegal Entry into Uganda

Two M23 rebels fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been sentenced  to 2 years over illegal entry by the   Kisoro Chief magistrates Court.

The court presided over by  the Kisoro  Chief  Magistrate Kenneth Komakech heard  from prosecution led by Best Kemigisha Niwagaba that Innocent Murwanashaka and Innocent Nkurunziza from Democratic Republic of Congo on 29th September , 2023 the suspects were arrested by locals at  Nyabwishenya sub-county Kisoro district and handed over to the Nyabwishenya police station.

Niwagaba told court that the arrested were found without legal travel credentials, which is contrary to section 53 of the Penal Code act.

They all pleaded not guilty before the magistrate.

Illegal entry into Uganda attracts punishments of two years imprisonment or payment of 2 million Uganda shillings or both.

While delivering his judgement His Worship Komakech condemned such cases of illegal entry into Uganda without valid documents.

He sentenced them to 2 years in prison but having been on remand for one month and 20 days they will serve for  1 year and 9 months

His Worship  Komakech also ordered  them to be deported back to the  Democratic  Republic of Congo  after serving  their sentence.
