URA WORKS THROUGH HOLIDAYS! Taxman Extends Customs Hours to Clear Trade Backlog

KAMPALA: The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has extended customs working hours throughout June 2026, giving importers, traders and customs agents extra time to clear pending cargo and ease pressure on the clearance system.
In a move aimed at supporting the business community, URA announced that its customs offices would operate for a full working day on June 9, 2026, despite the day being a public holiday.
The Authority also opened for business every Saturday throughout June, creating additional opportunities for importers, customs agents, bonded warehouse operators and other stakeholders to complete pending clearance transactions.
The special arrangement was introduced to reduce backlogs and improve the flow of goods through the country’s customs system.
URA said customs staff would be available on the additional working days to handle a range of clearance operations.
These include processing unverified goods, clearing cargo that has not yet been entered into the system and facilitating the exit and release of approved goods.
The move is expected to help reduce congestion at border points and bonded warehouses while ensuring that goods move more efficiently through the supply chain.
Bonded warehouse operators and logistics companies were encouraged to organise their operations around the additional working days.
They were advised to prepare the necessary documentation, coordinate cargo movements and make full use of the extra hours to speed up clearance.
Customs clearing agents and importers were similarly urged to take advantage of the extended schedule to follow up on pending transactions and complete their clearance processes.
The arrangement highlights URA’s focus on trade facilitation and improving services to the business community.
By keeping customs operations running during a public holiday and weekends, the Authority sought to respond to the needs of traders while helping to keep cargo moving.
URA’s intervention is also expected to ease pressure on the customs system and support faster and smoother movement of goods across Uganda’s trade corridors.
For importers and other customs stakeholders, the extended hours provided an opportunity to clear pending transactions without waiting for normal weekday operations.
The initiative reinforces URA’s role in facilitating trade while maintaining efficient customs operations and supporting economic activity.
