INSIDE BATTLE TO SAVE KING OYO: From The Surgery Hospital – Naguru, to Ruby, Aga Khan-Kenya, Germany and Dallas— Where the King Breathed His Last
The final year of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was marked by a desperate international medical battle that took the young Tooro monarch from hospitals in Kampala to Nairobi, Germany and finally the United States, where he died after doctors failed to save him.
Details of the King’s prolonged illness were revealed on Saturday by Ugandan diplomat Guma Komwiswa, the Tooro Kingdom Chief of Protocol, while delivering an official message from Queen Mother Best Kemigisa during the funeral service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal City.
JULY 2025 — THE PAIN BEGINS
According to the Queen Mother’s account, King Oyo first began experiencing unexplained pain in July 2025.
At first, the King reportedly believed the pain was related to his physical workouts. But when it persisted, he sought medical attention in Kampala.
FIRST STOP: THE SURGERY HOSPITAL, NAGURU
The King went to The Surgery Hospital in Naguru, where doctors performed an X-ray.
The X-ray did not identify the cause of the pain.
Oyo then underwent about two weeks of outpatient physiotherapy at the same hospital. When his condition failed to improve, doctors referred him to an orthopaedic specialist.
The specialist recommended an MRI.
SECOND STOP: RUBY HOSPITAL, KAMPALA
The MRI was carried out at Ruby Hospital in Kampala.
But again, the investigation failed to reveal the underlying illness.
At this stage, the King’s condition remained unexplained.
SEPTEMBER 2025 — THE SEARCH MOVES TO NAIROBI
The breakthrough came after King Oyo’s 29th coronation anniversary on September 12, 2025.
He subsequently underwent further investigations at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
There, a PET scan reportedly revealed the devastating diagnosis: angiosarcoma, described in the account delivered on behalf of Queen Mother Best Kemigisa as an aggressive form of cancer capable of spreading rapidly.
This was the turning point in the King’s medical journey.
FROM NAIROBI TO GERMANY
After the diagnosis was established in Nairobi, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa returned to Uganda and briefed President Yoweri Museveni.
The President subsequently facilitated the King’s transfer to Germany for specialised treatment. Museveni later publicly confirmed that government supported the King’s treatment in Germany and subsequently in the United States.
GERMANY — HEIDELBERG
In Germany, King Oyo was initially treated at Thoraxklinik Hospital in Heidelberg.
He was later transferred to Krankenhaus Salem Hospital, also in Heidelberg.
According to the Queen Mother’s account, the diagnosis was confirmed there and chemotherapy began in November 2025.
The chemotherapy continued until February 2026.
But the treatment did not stop the cancer from progressing.
The disease remained aggressive, and the medical team eventually decided that the King should be moved again.
THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER: GERMANY TO THE UNITED STATES
With the cancer continuing to advance despite treatment in Germany, King Oyo was transferred to the United States.
He was admitted to Dallas Medical Center in Texas and later treated at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Dallas.
It was in Dallas that the family reportedly received a period of renewed hope.
According to the Queen Mother’s account, the King’s condition showed remarkable improvement.
He was eating well, remained coherent and continued communicating with members of his family and senior Tooro officials.
He reportedly remained confident that he would recover.
WHY THE PUBLIC KNEW SO LITTLE
Throughout this period, the King wanted his medical condition kept private.
According to the account delivered by Guma Komwiswa, Oyo instructed Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire to tell his subjects that he was in the United States for a working visit and further studies.
That decision explains why there was little public information about the seriousness of his condition.
Indeed, on August 3, 2026, Tooro Kingdom had publicly rejected reports that the King was critically ill and receiving cancer treatment in a US hospital.
By August 27, however, the situation had changed dramatically.
The Kingdom confirmed that Oyo was critically ill and receiving medical care in the United States, while appealing for prayers and restraint.
AUGUST 27, 2026 — THE FINAL HOURS
According to the Queen Mother’s account, King Oyo remained in communication with people around him until his health suddenly deteriorated on August 27.
Doctors placed him on life support in a final attempt to save his life.
They were unsuccessful.
King Oyo died in Dallas, Texas, on August 27, 2026, aged 34. His death ended a 31-year reign that began when he was only three years old.
