KAMPALA — A massive scandal of biblical proportions has rocked the religious fraternity after Uganda’s Deputy Mufti, Sheikh Muhammad Haruna Bukenya, was dragged into a dirty UGX 1.2 Billion ($288,000) fake gold syndicate!

In an explosive Wednesday session at Kampala City Hall Court, Senior Grade One Magistrate Edgar Karakire issued stern criminal summons against the 55-year-old top Muslim cleric, ordering him to appear before the dock without fail to answer charges of grand fraud and conspiracy.

The development has sent shockwaves through Old Kampala and left the Muslim community reeling in disbelief as one of the country’s most revered religious figures is formally named in a cut-throat city gold racket.

THE SHS 1.2BN FAKE GOLD TRAP

According to explosive prosecution documents, Sheikh Bukenya, a resident of Kawuku in Entebbe Municipality, alongside his 53-year-old co-accused businessman Muzamiru Elias Lubega of Kasengejje, Wakiso District, allegedly orchestrated a high-stakes swindle against an unsuspecting buyer named Muhammad Kwaido.

Court heard that on August 6, 2026, in the heart of Kampala, the suspects—acting alongside other shadowy accomplices still on the run—allegedly lured Kwaido into parting with a staggering $288,000 (over UGX 1.2 Billion) in hard cash.

The juicy bait? A purported consignment of three (3) kilograms of pure gold!

However, investigators allege that the entire multi-million deal was a carefully crafted phantom transaction designed to fleece Kwaido clean.

COURT DRAMA: PROSECUTOR DEMANDS HIS HEAD!

During court proceedings, tension flared as the first accused, Lubega—who is currently out on bail—stood alone in the dock while his high-profile co-accused was nowhere to be seen.

When Lubega’s legal team demanded full prosecution disclosures to prepare their defense, State Prosecutor Miriam Akite dropped a bombshell. She revealed that the main case file had been recalled by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) following a protest petition secretly filed by Bukenya himself!

Refusing to let the cleric dodge justice, Prosecutor Akite pressed the magistrate to issue instant summons compelling Bukenya to face the law directly rather than fighting from the shadows.

Magistrate Karakire agreed, slapping the Deputy Mufti with criminal summons and adjourning the matter to November 25, 2026, for official mention.

HEAVY CHARGES: FACING YEARS BEHIND BARS

The embattled Deputy Mufti and his businessman partner are battling two serious criminal counts under the Penal Code Act:

Obtaining Money by False Pretence (Contrary to Section 285) — for allegedly pocketing over Shs 1.2BN under the guise of delivering 3kg of gold.

Conspiracy to Defraud (Contrary to Section 363) — for plotting a calculated scheme to siphon a fortune from their victim.

All eyes are now glued on City Hall Court on November 25, when the revered cleric will be forced to step onto the criminal dock, look the magistrate in the eye, and plead to the billion-shilling gold fraud charges!
