One of the best finishes you’ll see – Kenyan wins Pearl Of Africa Rally

Rai posted a time of 3:02:45 minutes
Rajbir Rai’s victory at the two-day Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally that climaxed on Saturday was remarkable in more than one way.

First off was with Omar Mayanja/Leon Ssenyange the best Ugandan finishers in fifth place. Pretty close for a rally where defending champion Jas Mangat dropping out on the opening day after a gear box problem!

But the most amazing aspect of this final was just how the young Kenyan Rai beat favourites Mohammed Essa and Gary Chaynes.

After completing a route worth 522km in districts of Wakiso and Luweero, the 24-year-old son of legendary two-time Kenya champion Sarbi Rai finished best in his Mitsubishi Evo IX within a best provisional time of three hours, two minutes and 45 seconds. All the while, Ronald Ssebuguzi/ Cedric Buzabo was the only Ugandan crew trying to give the continental event a real go but both never finished.

Amazing, we’ll all agree – although Ivorian Chaynes will be devastated with himself after slowing down into the final section. Chaynes on olleting the 25 points now leads the ARC standings on 101 with Essa second on 93.

Only 23 drivers completed the event that had attracted 41 crews.
