Government, Opposition to Guide Police on Public Order Management Act
Government and opposition leaders on Friday settled to work together and come to a universal interpretation of the Public Order Management Act (POMA) as Uganda 2016 general elections draws nearer.
In a meeting organized by Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, attended by representatives from the government and the opposition to discuss practical steps for ensuring that the forthcoming elections are conducted in a free, peaceful and secure environment, the two parties agreed that there is need to put in place an enabling law to guide the recruitment, training and operations of community policing.
“At the agreed of the meeting; the two parties…tasked the Attorney General to work with his counterpart in the Opposition and other stakeholders to come to a common understanding and interpretation of the Public Order Management Act (POMA) and advise the Police to implement it accordingly,” Julius Mucunguzi, the Prime Minister’s communications adviser said in a press statement yesterday.
The two parties also proposed that the “ongoing training of Crime Preventers needs to be reviewed” and “agreed that they will not tolerate formation of militia groups.”
They also came to a consensus that peace, stability and security of the country is a common good that must be jealously guarded by all to sustain democracy and development.
The Government delegation was led by The Prime Minister, Rt Hon Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, while the Opposition was led by The Leader of the Opposition, Rt Hon Wafula Oguttu.
