UBC Board Chair Apologizes to MPs

The Uganda Broadcasting Corporation-UBC board chairperson Nathan Nabeta has apologized for giving the Information and Communication Technology-ICT committee false information.

A fortnight ago, while appearing before the ICT committee, Nabeta told members that Signet Uganda, the business arm of UBC had acquired a license to transmit the digital Television signal.

However, a few days later Uganda Communication Commission denied the claim saying Signet can’t operate its application is reviewed.

This morning, members on the committee tasked Nabeta to explain why he lied to them. Barnabas Tinkasimire, the Buyaga West Member of parliament accused Nabeta of misleading the committee and asked him to apologize.

In his defense, Nabeta admitted that Signet was yet to receive an operational license. He however, said the process was in progress adding that, they had submitted all the necessary documents to UCC for scrutiny.

The International Telecommunications Union-ITU set June 17th 2015 as the deadline for African countries to migrate from analogue to digital TV broadcasting.

Vincent Bagiire, the Committee chairperson says all stakeholders are scheduled to meet this Friday discuss the country’s progress ahead of the deadline.
