Research from Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) shows that the number of street children has in the past few years risen to 10,000 that means at least 16 children go onto the city streets every day.

Efforts to keep street children off the city streets, even with the involvement of the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Ms Janet Museveni, have not yielded fruit.

Ms Ritah Nkemba of Dwelling Places, a non-governmental organisation, says, “as a result of the disarmament process that was not handled well,Eighty per cent of the street children in Uganda are from Napak District in Karamoja sub-region.”

Mr Peter Kaujju, the KCCA spokesperson, on sunday said the authority is to make an amendment in one of its laws that will “criminalise” donations to beggars.
