SICK OR STALLING? Ex-Speaker Among Health Claims Fuel Speculation Plans To Leave Country As Investigations Approach Decisive Stage

Just when the heat appeared to be rising around investigations linked to former Speaker Anita Annet Among, a dramatic health claim has exploded onto the political scene, triggering a fresh wave of questions, speculation and controversy.
For months, the once-powerful political heavyweight has remained largely out of public view.
Now, former Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko has thrust Among back into the spotlight after claiming she is seriously ill and in urgent need of medical attention.
“Rt Hon Anita Annet Among is very sickly. She has a blood clot in her legs, she cannot walk,” Nsereko claimed during a TikTok broadcast.
He further alleged that her legs were swollen and questioned why she had not been allowed access to treatment.
The claims have immediately divided opinion.
While supporters say illness should never be politicized, critics are asking hard questions about the timing of the revelations.
Why is the health issue surfacing now?
Why through political allies?
And why at a time when reports suggest investigators may be nearing key decisions?
Among herself has not publicly commented on the claims. No official medical report has been released and no government agency has publicly confirmed the alleged condition.
That vacuum has fueled a frenzy of speculation.
The latest health claims have only intensified debate over what happens next.
Is this a genuine medical emergency?
According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, investigators are said to be winding up their work and holding consultations with prosecutors on the next course of action.
There is speculation that the next move now is to formally arrest her and charge her in court and she is aware.
Sources told Red Pepper that intelligence has picked up signals that the health claims could be part of a broader campaign to generate sympathy as investigations reportedly approach a decisive stage.
Sources familiar with the political maneuvering surrounding the case claim that various options are allegedly being discussed by allies and supporters of the former Speaker.
We are told the former Speaker, in the grand scheme of things, wants to leave the country under the cover of seeking specialized treatment abroad.
The planners hope that once she leaves the country, her sympathizers can buy time to negotiate with powers that be in order not to suffer another court humiliation.
In doing so, they also reportedly hope to delay the impending arrest and court drama.
Intelligence is reportedly monitoring these moves. She is reportedly considered a flight risk and that’s why her passports were reportedly even seized.
Sources close to the unfolding developments claim that discussions about possible travel options have become increasingly complicated due to sanctions previously imposed on Among by the United States and the United Kingdom which also extend to their allies in EU and others.
However, it is believed she has some options.
Meanwhile, Ugandans remain sharply divided.
Some believe the perfect gift President Museveni can give Ugandans is for authorities to expedite investigations and have the former Speaker appear in the dock and formally charged.
There is fear that if not prosecuted and let to roam free, Among may go full revenge on all those behind her fall. She could literally ‘kill’ someone.
Others insist that the former Speaker deserves the same constitutional protections and presumption of innocence afforded to every Ugandan citizen.
