Soroti University has suspended the use of its newly commissioned Shs1.2 billion main gate after sections of its granite cladding reportedly detached and fell, posing a safety risk to pedestrians and motorists. The gate, constructed by the National Housing and Construction Company (NHCC) with government funding, was handed over to the university about three weeks ago.

In a letter dated October 14, 2026, Engineer Paul Anguria, the university’s Deputy Chief of Estates, directed the immediate closure of the gate and advised staff, students, visitors and other road users to use the previous alternative access route until the defects are rectified.

“The Directorate of Estates and Works wishes to inform the University community that the Main Gate has developed defects involving the debonding and falling of granite/stone cladding from the gate arch. This poses a significant risk to human life and property,” the letter reads.

Anguria said the university had engaged the contractor to address the defects and that the main gate would remain closed to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic until the necessary repairs are completed. The letter adds that the contractor is expected to undertake remedial works during the closure period, with the gate only reopening after the identified defects have been corrected and the university’s technical personnel confirm that it is safe for use.

Soroti University Public Relations Officer Juma Hassan Nyene said that although the project had been handed over, it remained within the defect liability period, during which the contractor is responsible for addressing construction defects. “The contractor is still responsible for repairs on the gate for about six months to one year. The contractor will come and assess what could have happened and make the corrections at no cost to the university,” Nyene said.

He explained that the gate project comprised several components beyond the visible structure, including a solar system, security cameras, information and communication technology equipment and related infrastructure. Nyene also welcomed scrutiny of the project’s cost and procurement process, saying the university was open to accountability and checks and balances.

“Whoever is concerned about the cost can get to the project manager because, as Soroti University, we are open to scrutiny and checks and balances,” he said. He added that anyone with questions about the project could seek clarification through the procurement process and the project management team. The university has not indicated how long the gate will remain closed, saying it will only be reopened after the repairs are completed and its technical personnel confirm that it is safe for use.
