Popular comedian Yokana Mbuuse, alias Kapere Lufotose, collapsed at his daughter’s school after complaining of a severe headache, according to a statement recorded by police as investigations into his sudden death begin. Kapere, 56, was attending a visitation and graduation ceremony at Jolivo Day Care and Junior School in Kyimbejja, Wakiso District, on Sunday when he suddenly fell ill in the presence of his wife, Lydia Nakandi, and other parents.

According to the statement recorded by the school director at Nsanji Police Station, Kapere had arrived at the school with his wife to visit their daughter, Queen, and was in a joyful mood as he watched her perform on stage. The situation changed moments later as top-class pupils prepared to cut a cake. Kapere reportedly complained of a severe headache before biting his tongue and dropping to his knees.

His wife, who was holding a baby, panicked as other parents raised the alarm. Those present laid him on a mat in an attempt to help him, but he barely responded and appeared to be in distress. He was rushed to the nearby Zam Zam Clinic, where medical personnel reportedly determined that his condition required referral to another facility.

Kapere was subsequently taken to Royale Health Services Hospital in Buddo, Wakiso District, where he was pronounced dead at about 5:46 pm. The circumstances surrounding his sudden collapse remain unclear. Addressing journalists at Naguru Police Headquarters in Kampala, Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Superintendent of Police Racheal Kawala confirmed the incident and said investigations had commenced. She said a post-mortem examination would be conducted to establish the actual cause of death.

Kapere rose to fame through the Amarula Family comedy group, alongside Allan Mujuni, popularly known as Amooti, and Nicholas Mpiirwe, alias Messe Bontwe. He later became a familiar face to television audiences through comedy skits on WBS TV’s Side Mirror programme.

His distinctive performances and comic character made him a recognisable figure in Uganda’s entertainment industry. He also featured in music videos, including National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s Mr. Money. Beyond entertainment, Kapere was an outspoken supporter of NUP and regularly participated in the party’s activities at its headquarters in Kavule, Kampala.

His death has drawn tributes from party leaders, supporters and members of the public, with Kyagulanyi describing him as a loyal friend and comrade whose humour helped brighten difficult moments.

Kapere’s death comes as fans and colleagues remember a comedian who built his public identity around making people laugh, while also extending his presence into Uganda’s political scene.
