Rukiga – The District covid 19 Taskforce has threatened to institute a total lockdown in Kamwezi Sub County over the continued disregard of the anti-COVID-19 standard operating procedures by residents.

The Rukiga District Covid-19 taskforce has given residents a one-week ultimatum from Saturday to announce a total lockdown until locals follow all the standard operating procedures.

The Rukiga Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Pulikeria Mwine Muhindo, also chairperson oF the district Covid-19 taskforce, said that cases of Covid-19 in Kamwezi Sub County have sky-rocketed

Mwine Muhindo further revealed that the rise in cases was a result of people who are suspected to be entering Uganda from Rwanda via porous borders.

Muhindo said that the rate at which Kamwezi Sub-county register’s Covid-19 cases is almost 50 percent.

“For example, on Friday this week, out of 21 people tested for Covid-19, 8 were positive and before on Wednesday last week when nine people tested, five were found positive,” said Muhindo.

She says that despite having held several sensitizations in the community and through different available platforms like radios, the cases of Covid-19 in Kamwezi Sub County are on increase.

Muhindo revealed that the decision to institute the lockdown was resolved in the meeting she chaired and attended by the Sub County leadership, the Acting District Health Officer Gilbert Ahumuza and the District LC5 Chairperson Robert Mbabazi, heads of security and health workers from Kamwezi Health centre IV.

“We decided to give a one-week ultimatum that locals, especially from Kamwezi trading centre, Rwamatunguru, and Mwanjar. And when they fail to adhere to the guidelines, we will announce a total lockdown,” a concerned Muhindo said.

She asked the people to follow all the SOPs like avoiding overcrowding in food markets, wearing of face masks, and among others..”
