A player in the Burundian president’s football team has survived an assassination attempt in the capital, Bujumbura, an underground group of independent journalists known as SOS Medias Burundi has reported.

A post on the official Facebook page of SOS Medias Burundi reads: “Jamal, a player in President [Pierre] Nkurunziza’s football team (Hallelujah FC) survived an assassination attempt.”

Sources from the suburb of Buyenzi, where Jamal lived, say that he was ambushed by armed men as he left his home, the post says.

“He received several bullets in his legs and was evacuated to the nearest hospital for treatment,” a Buyenzi resident told SOS Medias Burundi.

According to the post, Jamal was at one time the captain of Hallelujah FC.

There have been tit-for-tat killings in recent months in Bujumbura sparked by the announcement of President Nkurunziza’s third-term bid in April.
