About 16 Congolese refugees are nursing injuries they sustained after a bus on, which they were traveling overturned along Kagadi –Hoima Road in Kyenzige Sub County in Kibaale district on Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at a sharp bend at Rwengeye; about 1KM from Mugarike Trading center at around 2:00pm after the bus registration number UAN 292 overturned injuring critically sixteen of the 61 Congolese refugees on board. The refugees were being transferred from Bundibugyo district to Kyangwali refugee resettlement camp in Kyangwali Sub County in Hoima district.

Daniel Segawa, the Kibaale district Traffic Officer told local media that preliminary investigations indicate that the bus, which was in a convey of 16 others, overturned after it failed to negotiate the sharp bend. He attributes the accident to reckless driving on the part of the bus driver.

He says most of the accident victims suffered fractures on their arms and legs, and injuries on their body parts. Segawa says other victims escaped with mild injuries. The identities of the injured bus accident victims had not been established by the time of compiling this story.

The victims were rushed to Kagadi hospital for first aid. A Red Cross Society Volunteer says that they were working with the Medical staff at the facility to contain the situation. Efforts to get a comment from the medical personnel at Kagadi hospital were futile as they were busy treating the victims.

Last month, more than 60,000 refugees entered Uganda through Bundibugyo district, after rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces attacked the town of Kamango, 15 kilometers from the Uganda-DRC border.

Recently, the office of the prime minister started relocating about 20,000 Congolese refugees from Bundibugyo district to Hoima.
