Daily Ug (Lukumani Kaweesi): From the Streets of Masaka to Uganda’s Rising Musical Voice

Lukumani Kaweesi, popularly known as Daily Ug, is a resilient Ugandan artist whose life story reflects faith, perseverance, and the power of self-belief. Born on 22 July 1999 in Bwala, Masaka District, Daily Ug has risen from extreme hardship to become one of the most inspiring young voices in Uganda’s growing music scene.
Early Life and Background
Raised in Kagganda Bisanje village in Masaka, Daily Ug’s childhood was marked by struggle. He lost his father, Hajji Abasi Kasita, at just one year old and was brought up by his single mother with support from his grandparents. Growing up in poverty, he was forced to drop out of school due to lack of fees.
His mother later enrolled him in Islamic studies, believing faith would give him direction and hope. That spiritual foundation became a pillar in his life, shaping his discipline, mindset, and resilience.
In 2020, Daily Ug moved to Kampala for the first time, introduced to city life by his brother. After witnessing the opportunities available in the capital, he made a life-changing decision — he would never return to the village defeated by poverty.
Hustle, Survival, and Viral Breakthrough
Life in Kampala was far from easy. At 21, he worked at construction sites carrying sand and bricks. In 2021, he survived by selling jewelry known as “Kabiri Abiri” from street to street. During the COVID-19 pandemic, despite struggling himself, he shared his small savings with street children, buying them food.
Eventually asked to survive independently, he endured homelessness and collected used plastic bottles for resale to earn a living.
His breakthrough came unexpectedly in 2022. While at a movie library, he met a friend, Shavin, an upcoming artist. Using a simple phone, Daily Ug recorded a video narrating his life story and posted it on TikTok. Within 24 hours, the video exploded to over 1.5 million views and gained more than 50,000 followers.
Overwhelmed, he went live reciting verses from the Qur’an, thanking Allah for what he saw as a divine answer to his prayers. That viral moment marked the beginning of a new chapter.
The Birth of a Music Career
In 2023, Daily Ug made a bold decision — to transform his struggles into music. Though he had a religious background and initially paid little attention to music, he discovered singing as a hidden gift.
Living among underprivileged youth, he saw many talented children lacking opportunity. He vowed to use his story to inspire others to uncover their potential.
Determined to build a better future, he saved money and recorded his debut single, “Never.” Despite imperfections in his English, he remained confident. He often describes himself as “mentally American,” a phrase symbolizing his international vision and refusal to be limited by his background.
Musical Growth and Breakthrough Releases
In 2024, Daily Ug’s music career gained momentum. He released:
“Money Is the Game (Life)” – a deeply personal reflection on struggle and ambition.
“Nasali” – a romantic dedication to his then-girlfriend.
“Santiago” – a breakthrough hit that expanded his fanbase beyond Uganda.
“Cololo” and “My Caro” – tracks that further showcased his versatility and melodic growth.
His music blends real-life storytelling, street experience, faith, and aspiration. Each release reflects chapters of his journey — from poverty and survival to love, heartbreak, and hope.
Faith, Charity, and Mission Humanity
Beyond music, Daily Ug is deeply committed to charity work through Mission Humanity, an initiative focused on supporting vulnerable and street-connected children. Having lived that life himself, he understands their pain firsthand.
He advocates for combining creativity with education, encouraging youth to believe in their God-given talents while pursuing self-development.
Personal Struggles and Emotional Growth
Despite rising fame, Daily Ug faced emotional challenges behind the scenes. A painful heartbreak led him into a period of depression, testing his mental strength. Yet, even in his darkest moments, music remained his therapy — a source of healing, faith, and resilience.
A Vision Beyond Borders
Daily Ug is more than an artist; he is a symbol of transformation. From collecting plastic bottles on the streets of Kampala to building a growing music catalog, his journey reflects unwavering belief and determination.
With his international mindset, authentic storytelling, and commitment to uplifting others, Daily Ug continues to rise — not just as a musician, but as a voice for the unheard.
His story proves one powerful truth: your beginning does not define your destination.
