DON CHRIS FINALLY CAUGHT! Chased Out Of S.Africa, Skypins Boss Arrested Over Shs1.7bn Fake Jobs Scam…500+ Job Seekers Cursing
KAMPALA — The long arm of the law has finally caught up with city socialite Asiimwe Christian, alias Don Chris, the former boss of the defunct Sky Pins Tours and Travel, after he was arrested over allegations of fleecing hundreds of Ugandans in a fake overseas jobs scheme estimated at up to Shs1.75 billion.
Don Chris, who had been on the run since June 2025, was arrested on Wednesday night, August 26, from a bar in Zana, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala.
Police accuse the suspect of obtaining money by false pretence by promising desperate job seekers lucrative employment abroad in countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Qatar and Dubai.
The promised jobs included positions as waiters, cleaners, caregivers and other low-skilled workers.
But for hundreds of victims, the promised dream of working abroad allegedly turned into a financial nightmare.
Police say they have so far recorded statements from more than 500 alleged victims, with each reportedly paying between Shs5 million and Shs10 million, depending on the destination and type of job promised.
Don Chris is currently in police custody as detectives continue investigating the case. Police said he will be produced before court.
85 VICTIMS TRIGGERED MANHUNT
The case exploded in June 2025 after at least 85 job seekers petitioned State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara, complaining that they had lost millions to Sky Pins.
The minister referred the matter to the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), triggering a major investigation and a manhunt for Don Chris.
Investigators established that Sky Pins had mounted an aggressive publicity campaign on television, radio and TikTok, drawing job seekers to its offices at Haruna Mall in Ntinda.
Victims were allegedly promised an opportunity to travel abroad on loan after paying half of the required fees upfront.
They were issued company receipts and assured that they would travel within between two and six months.
But the trips never materialised.
As complaints mounted, the company allegedly disappeared from its Ntinda offices and quietly relocated to Kitende along Entebbe Road, where investigators later found the offices abandoned.
By July 2025, the number of complainants had reportedly increased from 85 to more than 350, with the alleged losses estimated between Shs1.4 billion and Shs1.75 billion.
Some victims also told police they were allegedly threatened when they demanded their money back.
DON CHRIS FLED UGANDA
With detectives closing in, investigators say Don Chris escaped Uganda on June 20, 2025, crossing through the Malaba border into Kenya before reportedly making his way to South Africa.
He allegedly remained in South Africa for more than a year before quietly returning to Uganda.
Reports indicate that his return followed a surge in xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
After returning, Don Chris reportedly went into hiding around Munyonyo and neighbouring areas, until detectives finally tracked him down at the Zana bar.
SKYPINS ‘LEGIT’ COVER
Although police investigations described Sky Pins as a fictitious entity, the company had apparently managed to create an appearance of legitimacy that attracted hundreds of job seekers.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs previously noted that Sky Pins had at one point facilitated the travel of seven Ugandans to the Netherlands.
Investigators believe the successful trips helped give the company credibility and enabled it to attract even more desperate job seekers.
Police are now appealing to anyone who paid money to Sky Pins Tours and Travel but failed to secure a job or travel abroad to report to the nearest police station.
Detectives have also warned Ugandans to verify the licensing status of labour recruitment companies before handing over money, particularly when promised overseas jobs appear too good to be true.
