Juliet Katusiime, the ex-wife of former NFA executive director, Mr Damian Akankwasa, has been found guilty of stealing Shs 900 million pending sentence that will be delivered today.

Katusiime was convicted of stealing the money from their matrimonial home in Naguru, a suburb on the outskirts of the city three years ago.

She was convicted together with a businessman, David Ssebuliba and Maj. Godfrey Kyomuhendo of the Ministry of Defence who were both found guilty of keeping the stolen money.

Akankwasa was also found guilty of forging false documents in the name of Annet Basemera, with intent to cheat.

Juliet Hatanga, the trial Magistrate agreed with one of the State witnesses who tesitified seeing Juliet carrying the two bags having the said money.

“Mr Akankwasa told court that he used to earn a salary of Shs11 million plus sitting allowances, while his brother was dealing in land, which was evidence to show that the money was there,” the magistrate said, adding that the convict knew about the money and preparations of buying land but she decided to take it.

Three years ago, the nation was astounded when the news broke that Juliet Katusiime had stolen her husband’s Shs 900 million from under a pillow in their marital bedroom.

This drew some anger from the public who were curious to know where someone who earns Shs 11 million could afford to have in his possession Shs 900.

The case turned the spotlight on the National Forestry Authority in which a trial of the former Executive Director was ordered on charges of illicit enrichment and led to his eventual dismissal in September 2009.
