HEARTLESS! Drama as merciless Nantaba men confiscate dead body from hapless relatives
There was drama in Kiyindi village, Buikwe district in eastern Uganda when two families clashed over the burial of a man’s body. The deceased identified as Christopher Mboowa shared a mother (Kevina Bayiga) with Ex Minister and Kayunga district woman Mp Aidah Nantaba.
He died in an accident. Trouble started over who where he was to be buried.
The Nantaba team had another option. Strange were hired; they descended onto hapless bereaving relatives and mercilessly confiscated a dead body.
The Kayunga woman MP, who isn’t on very good terms with Mboowa’s children, wife and other relatives, objected to having her half-brother buried in Kiyindi as he wished. She instead preferred to have him buried in Namankere village which is some good distance away.
Mboowa’s children, widow and Kiyindi village-mates objected by saying when still alive the deceased had unequivocally willed to be buried in Kiyindi where he had lived and raised his family for decades. They vigorously objected to Nantaba’s directive to bury him in Namankere and initially succeeded in chasing away the former Minister’s emissaries and the coffin they had carried. The grounds for objecting to Nantaba’s wishes also related to the fact that the Namankere location was a forested wasteland where no one lives; something the anti-Nantaba relatives saw as making the place inappropriate and unfit for the burial of their beloved Christopher Mboowa.
At the Kiyindi location, relatives gathered and even had a night vigil through the Monday night as they looked forward to burying Mboowa. The family members, relatives and friends had dug the grave and even bought a coffin to give their beloved Mboowa a decent send off. This grave had been dug in a big burial ground where many other Mboowa paternal relatives, who departed earlier, had been resting. They also dismissed the former Minister as being unreasonable because even in Buganda, it’s a taboo for anyone to be buried at their maternal side or home.
Kiyindi was unanimously considered to be the appropriate burial site not only because Mboowa lived there but also because it’s his paternal home. But, riding on the Kanyamas and the curious support she quickly secured from Lugazi/Buikwe District Police Commander (DPC), the Aidah Nantaba camp members prevail as none of the relatives, friends and villages at Kiyindi would effectively stand in their way that fateful Tuesday afternoon when they dramatically stormed the Kiyindi home and forcefully carried away Christopher Mboowa’s body to the unsuitable Namankere new burial site which belongs to Mzee Naluwooza who is the mother to both Mboowa and Aidah Nantaba. In total, the elderly Naluwooza produced 15 children with different fathers.
On reorganizing themselves, the Nantaba’s squad members once again came with their own coffin into which they stuffed Mboowa’s body and discarded the coffin the Kiyindi members had bought. It was a heart-breaking moment as Mboowa’s hapless widow Kevina Bayiga unsuccessfully tried standing up to the pro-Nantaba kanyamas who came with Police from Lugazi. Mboowa’s body was taken away as his hapless widow, village friends and children wailed as they protested in vain.
After losing the battle to the pro-Nantaba squad, the Kiyindi mourners and family members agreed to console themselves by planting a banana tree (ekitooke) in the grave that had been dug and constructed ahead of Mboowa’s burial which had been destined for Wednesday. The same kitooke planted is the appropriate Ganda cultural way to deal with the situation once the family’s right to bury their loved one is taken away in circumstances similar to what happened at Kiyindi. As they consoled themselves, the elderly mourners at Kiyindi cursed the indifferent Aidah Nantaba for being corrupted by political power to the extent of not respecting her elder half-brother’s wish to be buried at Kiyindi.
They also asserted that in the process of altering her elder half-brother’s written will, the former Minister had also disrespected and disregarded the Ganda culture. The Kiyindi area LC officials implored President Museveni to intervene and enforce justice in favor of Mboowa’s children and wife asserting that where things have reached, Nantaba has become so powerful only Gen Museveni and his State House can effectively sanction her. The aggrieved Kiyindi residents also cursed the Lugazi/Buikwe DPC for accepting to become a stooge for the loaded former Minister.
The widow and the orphans were equally inconsolable as they took advantage of the media cameras present to appeal to President Museveni to prevail on his defiant cadre Aidah Nantaba so that the written will and wishes of the deceased Christopher Mboowa can be respected especially regarding where he wished to be buried. The DPC refused to comment on the Kiyindi chaos and instead advised the curious and inquisitive journalists to direct all their questions to Aidah Nantaba since she is the one mourners at Christopher Mboowa’s Kiyindi home or residence were specifically complaining against.
