How AYA Group Champions Local Food Processing to Unlock More Value from Uganda’s Agriculture

Agriculture is central to Uganda’s economy, but the value of agricultural production can extend far beyond the farm. Processing, storage, packaging, distribution and reliable access to markets all help determine how much value remains within the country.
Flour milling and food manufacturing are important links in this chain. By processing grains and other agricultural products, businesses can connect farmers and traders with retailers, bakeries, food service operators and households.
’s interests in flour milling and food production place it within this important part of the economy. Investment in productive processing capacity can support the development of domestic supply chains and help businesses serve customers with consistent products and dependable distribution.
The wider opportunity is significant, but it requires practical action. Producers need access to suitable raw materials, reliable power and transport, modern equipment, working capital and quality-control systems. Farmers and suppliers benefit when market requirements are clear and commercial relationships are reliable.

Food manufacturers also have a responsibility to maintain quality, comply with applicable standards and operate efficiently. Competitiveness depends on controlling costs, reducing waste, improving productivity and earning consumer trust.
Uganda’s industrial development will be stronger when farmers, processors, transporters, retailers and public institutions work together to address bottlenecks across the value chain. Local processing should complement efforts to improve agricultural productivity and expand access to regional markets.
The goal is not simply to produce more. It is to build a food system that creates more value from what Uganda grows, supports reliable supply and develops opportunities throughout the economy.
