Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu, the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, has said that the President’s decision to close Makerere University until further notice was long overdue.
“It has been difficult here, I was aware that very soon, the non-teaching staff was also planning to strike again, when do we end this circus? Am highly supportive of the President’s decision to close the University so that we can get a lasting solution,” Ddumba said.
Ddumba, who has been under pressure to resign for what his critics say is mismanagement of the university, blames the malaise afflicting the university on inadequate funding.
“There is a problem here, people are claiming that the administration is stealing money, but I don’t see the money they are talking about,” Ddumba said.
Makerere University has faced several strikes since this semester started.
The non-teaching staff was on strike at the start of the semester which forced the University management to extend the reporting date.
