Kabale Residents asked to vacate wetlands to mitigate on effects of Climate Change

Ronald Bakak the Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner has called on the people of Kabale to vacate wetlands if they are to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Bakak made the call on Tuesday  as he presided over the handover of relief food and other items that were donated by the Office of the Prime Minister to a section of residents of Kitumba Sub County, who were severely affected by mudslides last year.

The heavy downpour that hit most parts of Kabale District on 27th September 2023, destroyed a lot of property including crop gardens, roads and houses in Kitumba Sub County, and also led to the death of a nursery pupil of Kanyankwanzi Primary school in Kitumba Sub County.

The most affected areas included Kanyankwanzi and Bukora villages.

Bakak noted that lately Kabale district and entire Kigezi region have been suffered consequences of climate change like landslides, floods, hailstorms among others, due to encroachment on wetlands and deforestation among others.

Wilson Byoruganda, The Kitumba Sub county Senior Assistant Secretary, says that they received relief items including 13,000kgs of Maize flour, 6500 Kgs of beans and 100 pieces of Tarpaulin.

Gordon Manzi the Kabale District Principal Assistant Secretary, the guidelines from the Office of Prime Minister, the relief items are supposed to be distributed to 84 households most affected by the landslides and other 132 vulnerable households.

The other households include, households headed by widows, the sick, the elderly, child headed households, households headed by people living with HIV/Aids and those headed by persons with disability.
