Kabaziguruka Granted Bail

By Alex Masereka

Nakawa Municipality MP  Michael Kabaziguruka who  is charged with treachery has been granted bail by the High Court.

This comes days after the same court set the 8th/November 2016  to commence the  hearing of a treachery case against the lawmaker.

Kabaziģuruka together with 25 other people including 22 UPDF officers are said to have contrived a plot to overthrow the government of Uganda by use of fire arms,  an offence the prosecution says was committed between  February and June this year in the districts of Kampala,  Wakiso and Luweero .

Before his bail was granted, Kabaziguruka and his co-accused have been on remand at Kigo government prison and Makindye Millitary police barracks respectively.

However, Kabaziģuruka has  since challenged this trial in the Court of Appeal and  refused to  plead to the charges on grounds that he is not a military officer to be tried by the Military court.

The youthful MP also moved to apply for bail before the High Court -Criminal division saying the General Court Martial does not grant bail to civilian suspects who appear before it.
