She described Parliament’s decision to approve increase of Member of Parliament nomination fee to as unrealistic prohibitive.

Kadaga said if she was the chair of the session, she would not have allowed it to pass.

“If I was in the chair when Parliament passed UGX3M Member of Parliament nomination fee, I wouldn’t have allowed it to pass,” she said in a plenary session yesterday.

She said the Member of Parliament nomination fees increment made it difficult for many people to compete for public office.

The Constitutional Court earlier this month ruled that aspirants intending to contest for Member of Parliament should pay the Shs3million nomination fee.

Justice Remmy Kasule in his ruling reasoned that issuing an interim order against the nomination fee would stop the entire nomination, campaign and election process for presidency and MPs.

The laws hiking fee for political aspirants were passed by parliament, Presidential Elections Amendment Bill 2015 and the Parliamentary Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2015 were amended in October increasing fee for presidential aspirants from Shs8million to Shs20million and nomination fee for Member of Parliament from Shs200,000 shillings to Shs3million.
