FORT PORTAL — The Tooro Kingdom has confirmed that King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV is critically ill, dismissing social media reports claiming that the 34-year-old monarch has died.
The clarification was issued Thursday evening by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiiki, as rumours about the King’s health swept across social media, triggering anxiety among his subjects and well-wishers.
In an official message addressed to “all the Abatooro and the general public,” Rwomire confirmed that King Oyo is alive but in critical condition.
“This is to inform you that His Majesty King Oyo is currently in a critical condition,” Rwomire said.
The Prime Minister appealed to the people of Tooro, friends of the kingdom and well-wishers across the world to keep the monarch in their thoughts and prayers.
He described the situation as a “difficult and deeply concerning time”, while calling for calm and restraint.
“We understand the concern and anxiety that news of this nature will naturally cause, but we ask for calm, restraint and respect for His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Rwomire said.
DEATH CLAIMS SPARK PANIC
The clarification followed a wave of social media speculation after a journalist claiming to have connections within the kingdom posted that King Oyo had died.
The claim quickly spread, prompting concern among the Abatooro and people across Uganda.
However, the kingdom moved to stop the reports, insisting that the King is alive and that claims of his death remain unverified.
Rwomire also warned the public against circulating rumours and unconfirmed information about the monarch’s health.
KINGDOM OFFICES CLOSED
Meanwhile, attempts by journalists to establish more information about the King’s condition hit a dead end after reporters who visited the Tooro Kingdom headquarters in Fort Portal were unable to access the premises.
Security guards reportedly told the reporters that the offices had been closed to the public ahead of the King’s coronation anniversary.
The kingdom has not disclosed the nature of the illness affecting the King, nor revealed where he is currently receiving treatment.
Officials say further information will only be released through the kingdom’s official communication channels when appropriate.
ABATOORO ASKED TO PRAY
Rwomire urged the people of Tooro and the King’s friends and well-wishers around the world to stand together in prayer during the uncertain period.
The development comes as Tooro prepares to mark King Oyo’s coronation anniversary, an occasion that normally attracts cultural leaders, politicians, dignitaries and thousands of Abatooro and visitors to the kingdom.
For now, the Tooro Kingdom’s official position remains clear: King Oyo is alive but critically ill, while reports claiming that he has died have not been confirmed by the kingdom.
