LIRA: The Pakistan Association Uganda (PAU), Lira Chapter, has stepped up efforts to support communities in the Lango sub-region, with plans targeting healthcare, clean water, girl-child education and employment creation.

Under the leadership of President Muhammad Nasir Mian and General Secretary Waseem Muhammad, the association is pursuing a development agenda aimed at improving livelihoods while strengthening ties between the Pakistani community and the people of Lango.

One of its key priorities is expanding access to healthcare, with the association lobbying government and development partners to establish a dedicated health camp, either permanent or mobile, to bring medical services closer to communities.

PAU-Lira says the proposed initiative is intended to help residents access healthcare more easily, particularly those who face challenges reaching medical facilities.

JOBS FOR LOCALS

Beyond healthcare, the association is seeking to attract more investors to the region to create employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

The Mian Group of Companies, which has established operations in the area, currently employs more than 150 people from the local community, according to the association.

President Nasir Mian said PAU-Lira intends to build on such investments by encouraging additional businesses to establish operations in Lango, helping to expand local employment and economic activity.

GIRL-CHILD EDUCATION

The association is also directing support towards schoolgirls through the distribution of sanitary pads and other essential supplies.

The initiative seeks to address menstrual hygiene challenges that can disrupt girls’ school attendance and learning, while supporting their continued participation in education.

PAU-Lira considers education a key part of its community outreach, with particular attention to the needs of vulnerable learners.

SAFE WATER DRIVE

Access to clean water is another area on the association’s agenda, with plans to repair broken boreholes and wells in villages across the sub-region.

The proposed repairs are intended to reduce the distances residents travel to collect water, ease the burden on households and help limit exposure to waterborne diseases associated with unsafe water sources.

General Secretary Waseem Muhammad said the association was working with local leaders to identify community needs and ensure that its interventions reach the intended beneficiaries.

PARTNER IN DEVELOPMENT

President Nasir Mian said the association wanted to contribute beyond cultural activities by supporting initiatives that respond to practical challenges facing communities in Lango.

The planned interventions bring together health advocacy, investment mobilisation, education support and access to safe water as part of PAU-Lira’s wider community engagement.

The association’s proposed health camp and borehole repairs will require continued coordination with relevant authorities and development partners, while its investment drive is expected to focus on creating further opportunities for local residents.

Through these efforts, PAU-Lira aims to strengthen its partnership with the Lango community and contribute to improved livelihoods and sustainable development in the region.
