Late former South African president, Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has rallied behind her stepdaughter Makaziwe saying newspaper reports suggesting the family is at war with itself are bogus.
Makaziwe is Madiba’s child from his first marriage with Evelyn Mase.
In a statement Madikizela-Mandela has accused the print media of what she calls ‘mischievous innuendos’ designed to disgrace the family.
She says there is no succession debate in the Mandela family.
Madikizela-Mandela says by customary law and tradition Makaziwe will head the family and will take decisions supported by her other sisters Zenani and Zindzi who are her daughters.
She says Mandela’s eldest grandson Mandla is part of the next generation suggesting he will have to abide by Makaziwe’s decisions.
This comes amidst newspaper reports of deep divisions within the family after Mandela passed away.
Madikizela-Mandela has slammed the media saying the reports are inappropriate as the family is still in mourning.
