Mamdani speaks out: I Am Not Employed As A Professor

Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR) Executive Director Prof Mahmood Mamdani has clarified he is not a professor or lecture, hence can’t be barred by the 70yr age limit.

His comment comes on the backdrop of media reports revealing that Makerere University vice chancellor Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu, early this month, penned a letter to the university’s appointments board Chairman, Mr Bruce Balaba Kabaasa arguing that Mamdani who has clocked the retirement age, 70 shouldn’t be re-appointed.

Prof Mamdani has been shortlisted for re-appointment as MISR executive director. He tweeted that he is employed as executive director, an administrative position.

“Hello friends! Makerere University rules set an age limit of 70 years for a professor but none for an academic administrator. I am employed, paid and held accountable as the executive director of Makerere Institute of Social Research, an administrative position,” he tweeted on Thursday.

He further noted; “Officialdom should be concerned with how satisfactorily I perform these duties. It should not be concerned with other things I do, whether research or lectures or even football or singing.”

The duo’s relationship soured when Dr Stella Nyazi, a relative to Prof Ddumba undressed in April protesting what she called Mamdani’s dictatorship.

As the battle between Prof Mamdani and Dr Nyanzi raged, he issued a statement pinning the vice chancellor.

Madmani argued that Prof Ddumba was involved in encouraging, fomenting and prolonging insubordination of both Dr. Nyanzi and a few graduate students of MISR, all of who were increasingly being emboldened by what they saw as the support towards their cause from the highest office in this institution.

He also argued that Prof Ddumba should be investigated after allegations had been presented to the Appointments Board over Vice chancellor’s case against the PhD programme at Makerere Institute of Social Research and the renewal of his contract.
