MILESTONE! Minister Babalanda calls for hard work as UPPC gears up to celebrate 120 years
Babalanda warned the management and staff against misappropriation of the allocated funds
The Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda, has urged Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) staff to stay focused and work hard to ensure that the corporation is financially stable and is operating par excellence.
Babalanda made the remarks while visiting the Entebbe based public enterprise which is under the Office of the President on Wednesday 22nd June, 2022.
During the visit, she approved the corporation’s Shs20.6billion budget for the coming financial year.
“We need to attract more business to UPPC and to obtain more friends and clients,” she said.
Babalanda warned the management and staff against misappropriation of the allocated funds.
“Any diversion will be a big disservice to the corporation and will certainly attract very big penalties,” she said.
UPPC, one of the oldest institutions in Uganda which started operations during the colonial period in 1902 will be celebrating 120 years of existence in September this year.
Babalanda urged the UPPC leadership and staff to publicise the corporation’s work of the past century as well as position it to earn more businesses in the current environment.
“As we celebrate the 120 years, we shall showcase to the general public what we are doing in terms of printing and publishing. We shall hold an event which will act as a major reunion of the printing and publishing fraternity,” Babalanda said.
Kenneth Oluka, the UPPC acting Managing Director, gave an assurance to the minister that the corporation’s staff are committed to fulfilling its mandate. He led the minister on a tour of the corporation’s premises.
Oluka also highlighted to the minister some of the key achievements of UPPC in the last six months since he was appointed.
“We have developed a five-year strategy as a way of responding to the environment and industry trends and also to reposition the corporation as a leader in the sector,” Oluka said.
UPPC is part of the institutions implementing a security printing venture that the Government of Uganda entered into with Veridos GmbH and Giesecke + Devrient GmbH, a consortium of companies from Germany. The venture involves construction of the security printing factory which will be situated at the UPPC premises in Entebbe. Its construction started last month.
Upon completion, the factory will be used in the production of national identity cards, passports, driving licenses, academic certificates and land titles among other documents that the Government may consider to be of security nature.
