The Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) has today recovered UGX1.8bn from a Chinese Construction company for the ‘work never done’ along Vurra-Arua-Koboko Road.
Addressing the media at Parliament, the committee chairperson Abdu Katuntu said that the money in question had been paid for alleged late issuance of a certificate of environmental impact assessment by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).
In contrary, NEMA confirmed that the certificate was issued in the stipulated timeframe and there was no need for such a hefty payment.
Katuntu therefore revealed that this was a bogus claim aimed at swindling government funds and accused the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) officials for acting reckless in paying the said amount.
Hon. Katuntu has vowed to review business contracts of companies that deal with government and those in dishonest dealing will be blacklisted.
