The National Rugby Sevens Series was meant to kick off this weekend.

PEPPER SPORT | The 2022 National Rugby Sevens Series dubbed Nile Special 7s for sponsorship reasons has been postponed to next month, the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has confirmed via a missive.

The series was set to kick off this Saturday, 9th July running for two days at Legends Grounds in Kampala. The Mileke circuit/Mileke 7s hosted by Warriors RFC was set to kick off proceedings as it’s been the tradition in the recent past but it will have to wait.

URU had even held draws and released groups for the opening leg but have back-peddled. Even the organizers were geared up for the do with the media accreditation process opened as well as fans engagements on social media including the teams putting in the work in training.

According to URU, the focus right now is on the national team schedule with the XVs side (Rugby Cranes) set to take on neighbors Kenya in the Elgon Cup with the first leg slated for 23rd July 2022 in Kampala while the return leg will be on 30th July 2022 in Nairobi. The XVs team is currently in France where they had gone to participate at the Rugby Africa Cup.

“URU currently has a busy schedule with immediate focus being the 15s international season. The Elgon Cup is coming up… and the 7s team will also be participating in important international tournaments Each of these tournaments deserves to get the full focus and attention they deserve from URU, the players and partners,” URU said via a missive.

The postponement doesn’t affect just the national 7s series but the regional 7s as well. The latter has been going on but now grind to a halt.

The Nile Special 7s will commence on 6th August 2022 and the new activity calendar will be released by URU.

This year’s series was initially set to have seven legs with three upcountry events.
