SAVING OUR ANGELS! Speaker Oboth Lights Up Mbale as Thousands Storm Streets for Kids’ Brain Surgery Drive

MBALE — Thousands of spirited runners flooded the streets of Mbale on Saturday morning, transforming the city into a sea of hope, sweat, and charity as Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth officially flagged off the milestone 10th Annual CURE Brain Surgery Run.
In an electric, emotionally charged atmosphere, Speaker Oboth stood alongside State Minister for Public Service Hon. Lydia Wanyoto, top lawmakers, local dignitaries, and an unstoppable crowd of well-wishers—all united by a single, urgent mission: to rescue dying children.
Laying aside political formality, Speaker Oboth delivered a deeply personal testimony that silenced and moved the packed crowd. Opening his heart, the Speaker revealed he was not standing on the podium merely as a leader, but as a grateful witness whose life had been touched directly by the Mbale facility after bringing a patient there for care.
“I am here on a personal duty to pay back what this hospital did,” Oboth declared, hailing CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda as an unmatched global beacon of pediatric neurosurgery across Eastern and Central Africa.
Oboth emphasized that when you save one child’s life, you ignite a powerful ripple effect that rescues whole families and lifts entire communities from despair.
For ten glorious years, the CURE Brain Surgery Run has been Mbale’s powerhouse charity lifeline.
Operating at the front lines of pediatric medicine, CURE Children’s Hospital of Uganda performs an astounding 2,200+ specialized brain and spine surgeries every year—tackling agonizing conditions such as hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) and spina bifida—while treating over 10,000 outpatients annually.
Crucially, these life-or-death procedures are delivered 100% FREE OF CHARGE to desperately poor families through local and international donor sponsorships. Every sweat-soaked step taken by runners on Saturday went directly toward keeping those surgical theatre doors open.
Beyond raising vital millions, Saturday’s explosive run struck a massive blow against backward societal superstitions.
Hospital bosses and leaders sent a clear, thunderous message across Uganda: deadly conditions like hydrocephalus and spina bifida are treatable medical diseases, NOT curses or the result of witchcraft.
Leaders made a passionate plea to parents across the country: Stop hiding sick children in back rooms out of fear and shame. Bring them out into the light, bring them to Mbale early, and give them a fighting chance at life!
Bringing the vibrant morning to a rousing finish, Speaker Oboth saluted the sea of runners, tireless medical teams, heroic sponsors, and volunteers who made the 10th edition an unforgettable triumph.
Issuing a rallying cry to the entire nation, Oboth urged every Ugandan to keep fighting for the helpless:
“Let us stand together and ensure that no vulnerable child in this country is ever left behind!”
