In the buildup to the match KCCA were full of confidence and the media had declared the game KCCA’s pre coronation game.

But The Saints were not intimidated by the pre match bravado despite missing five first team players on loan from KCCA.

The Saints, much changed, started brightly and after 26 minutes, Alex Kitata headed beautifully to beat KCCA goalie Emmanuel Opio who couldn’t get down quickly enough.

The Saints could have gone 2-0 up but Ivan Kiweewa shot directly at the keeper.

Then, Kiweewa again found himself facing the keeper. He hesitated and when he fired off, it was with his left, his weakest foot and it went woefully off target.

At 42 minutes KCCA got the break they wanted and Akinyemi found space on the left flank and fired a low shot that beat Richard Anyama and level the matters 1-1.

But The Saints immediately attacked and Isaac Kirabira’s shot was handled by Martin Mpuuga in the box. The ref pointed to the spot and Kiweewa stepped forward  and coolly converted to make it 1-2 in favour of The Saints.

The second half was more tactical than the first. The Saints stood strong as KCCA loaded the pitch with an array of forwards.

But The Saints held on for a famous victory against KCCA at their home against the would be champions.
