TOORO THRONE WAR! COURT BOMBSHELL HOURS BEFORE CORONATION…NEW KING IN LIMBO AS PETITIONERS RUSH TO COURT TO BLOCK TOMORROW’S ENTHRONEMENT
FORT PORTAL — Drama has exploded in Tooro just hours before the highly anticipated coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, with a last-minute court petition threatening to derail tomorrow’s royal ceremony.
The bombshell application filed before the Fort Portal High Court seeks to stop the September 29 installation, throwing the kingdom’s already tense succession saga into fresh uncertainty.
Two Batooro, Derick Alitugabira and Juliet Kangume, together with Walezi Wa Katiba, a group advocating for the rule of law and good governance, have asked court to slam the brakes on the coronation.
Represented by Messrs Thomas and Michael Advocates, the applicants are seeking an interim order restraining the planned installation of Kijanangoma until their main case challenging his selection is heard and determined.
The applicants claim the selection of Kijanangoma violated the wishes of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
According to their court filings, Oyo left a written Will directing that his son should succeed him and, if his son was unavailable, his cousin should take over the throne.
That claim has now dragged former Queen Mother Best Kemigisa into the centre of the explosive legal battle.
The applicants allege that Kemigisa previously stated that the late King left behind a son and are asking court to compel her to produce the alleged heir.
Their demand could potentially open an entirely new chapter in the Tooro succession saga.
In their emergency application, the petitioners want court to restrain the planned coronation and any subsequent installation arising from the disputed selection.
They argue that allowing the ceremony to proceed could create changes to the kingdom’s leadership that may be difficult to reverse before their substantive case is decided.
The applicants further claim they risk suffering irreparable damage if the interim order is not granted, while arguing that stopping the ceremony temporarily would not unfairly prejudice the respondents.
The court documents therefore place a giant question mark over Tuesday’s much-awaited royal ceremony.
With preparations for the coronation already underway, attention has now shifted to the Fort Portal High Court and whether it will intervene before the prince takes the throne.
CORONATION OR COURTROOM?
That is the dramatic question now hanging over Tooro.
By press time, the High Court had not yet heard or determined the emergency application, leaving the fate of tomorrow’s coronation uncertain.
For a kingdom that has spent weeks preparing for a new chapter after the death of Omukama Oyo, the latest court move has delivered an extraordinary last-minute twist.
The throne is ready. The guests are expected. But now, court has been asked to decide whether the coronation goes ahead.
