Uganda’s sports fraternity is struggling to come to terms with the shocking and violent death of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo, whose life was cut short in a brutal mob attack that has left more questions than answers.

As family members, teammates and friends mourn one of Uganda Rugby’s brightest talents, investigators are racing against time to establish exactly what happened in the moments before the 27-year-old was beaten and fatally injured in Ntinda.

Was he mistaken for a thief during a robbery incident?

Or was a misunderstanding involving a woman he was reportedly with the spark that ignited a deadly mob frenzy?

Those are the troubling questions hanging over a case that has shocked the nation.

The tragic incident happened in the afternoon of Friday, June 5, 2026, in Naguru Upper Zone, Bukoto I Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police, Gongodyo was allegedly subjected to mob justice by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.

However, police say investigations are still ongoing and the exact circumstances remain unclear.

Three suspects have since been arrested and are being held at Kira Road Police Station.

They have been identified as Noordin Ssebagala, Rode Ayebazibwe and Juliet Namukose.

Police say the trio is assisting detectives as they piece together what exactly unfolded on that fateful evening.

What has made the case even more mysterious are the conflicting versions of events that continue to emerge.

During a requiem service held in Kampala, Gongodyo’s father narrated an account that painted his son as an innocent passerby caught up in a deadly case of mistaken identity.

According to him, Sydney was crossing the road when a suspected thief allegedly grabbed a woman’s handbag before escaping on a waiting boda boda motorcycle.

As the victim screamed for help, boda boda riders and members of the public reportedly rushed to the scene.

In the confusion, they allegedly mistook Gongodyo for the fleeing suspect.

Despite reportedly pleading for his innocence, the rugby player was attacked by the crowd, beaten and later stabbed.

His father believes his son became an innocent victim of a public desperate for instant justice.

However, another version of events has been circulating among residents and on social media.

According to these claims, Gongodyo was allegedly in the company of a female companion shortly before the mob attack.

Sources claim the pair developed a misunderstanding.

It is alleged that during the disagreement, Gongodyo attempted to inspect or take hold of the woman’s handbag.

The situation reportedly escalated into a scuffle.

Some witnesses claim the woman shouted for help and allegedly screamed “thief” during the confrontation.

Within seconds, according to this version, bystanders and boda boda riders descended on the scene.

Before anyone could establish exactly what had happened, the crowd allegedly turned violent.

Whether this account is true remains unconfirmed and police have not officially endorsed the claims.

Detectives are expected to examine all available evidence, witness statements and CCTV footage, if any exists, before determining what transpired.

Earlier reports had also suggested that Gongodyo may have been assaulted following a road accident involving boda boda riders.

That version has since been strongly disputed by both family members and investigators.

What is certain is that the rugby star suffered severe injuries during the mob attack.

Police officers responded to the scene and rushed him to Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries at around 7:00 pm.

His death has plunged Uganda’s rugby fraternity into deep mourning.

Gongodyo was a respected player who had represented Uganda on the international stage and was also a student at Makerere University.

The talented forward was widely regarded as one of the country’s promising rugby stars.

His death was so devastating that Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe ordered the postponement of a Uganda Rugby Premiership semifinal match between Black Pirates and Heathens in his honour.

At his funeral service, mourners were moved to tears as his mother recounted her son’s final hours.

Fighting back emotion, she revealed that Sydney had been heading home to pick up his younger sister, Precious, whom he was supposed to take to Nabisunsa Girls School.

She repeatedly called his phone after he failed to arrive.

Unknown to her, her son was fighting for his life just a short distance away.

“Can you imagine I am in the house in Ntinda, and Sydney is dying outside in Ntinda?” she painfully told mourners.

The grieving mother described Sydney as a disciplined, ambitious and loving young man who treated relatives and family friends like siblings.

As tributes continue pouring in, another debate has emerged.

Some Ugandans believe stereotypes may have played a role in the tragedy.

Several social media users have questioned whether Gongodyo’s appearance may have influenced the crowd’s perception of him.

One emotional tribute suggested that young men with dreadlocks and unconventional hairstyles are often unfairly stereotyped as criminals.

The writer argued that appearances do not define a person’s character and warned against judging people based on how they look.

Those sentiments have resonated with many Ugandans who believe the tragedy highlights the dangers of snap judgments and mob justice.

According to the Police Crime Report 2025, at least 950 people were killed in mob attacks across Uganda last year alone.

Many victims were accused of crimes ranging from theft and burglary to witchcraft and robbery.

In many cases, investigations later revealed that some of the victims were innocent.

Police spokesperson SP Rachel Kawala has strongly condemned the attack and urged the public to report suspected criminals to law enforcement authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.

As detectives continue their investigations, one painful question remains unanswered:

What really happened to Sydney Gongodyo in the final moments before the mob descended on him?

Until investigators establish the truth, the death of the rugby star remains a chilling mystery that has left a grieving family demanding answers and a nation mourning a life lost too soon.
