Uganda Decides 2026: 8 cleared to fight for country’s top office

The Electoral Commission has confirmed eight presidential candidates who will appear on the ballot for Uganda’s 2025/2026 General Elections, officially flagging off the race to State House.

Among those cleared is incumbent President Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni, nominated on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, who is seeking to extend his decades-long rule. His closest challenger from the 2021 elections, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform (NUP), also secured nomination, setting the stage for yet another high-profile contest.
Other candidates in the race include Kasibante Robert of the National Peasants Party (NPP), Mabirizi Joseph of the Conservative Party (CP), Nandala Mafabi James Nathan of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Mugisha Gregory Muntu Oyera of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Munyagwa Mubarak Sserunga of the Common Man’s Party (CMP), and Bulira Frank Kabinga of the Revolutionary People’s Party (RPP).
The Electoral Commission confirmed that all eight aspirants met the legal requirements under the Presidential Elections Act, making them eligible to campaign.
With nominations completed, attention now turns to the campaign trail where candidates are expected to unveil their manifestos and rally support nationwide. The 2026 election is widely seen as one of the most competitive in recent history, pitting seasoned opposition figures against Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986.
