A scandal is brewing as more Ugandan women are being rounded up in Thailand and other Asian countries for engaging in prostitution — a development that is fast becoming a national embarrassment.

Sources reveal that the women are not victims of trafficking but are willingly jetting out in search of quick cash, only to end up behind bars in filthy, sub-standard detention centers when caught by authorities.

The arrests have now become a blot on Uganda’s reputation abroad, with critics saying the actions of a reckless few are dragging the country — and Africa as a whole — through the mud.

Diplomatic missions are under pressure to step in, both to demand humane treatment for those already detained and to clamp down on the shameful trend. Ugandan authorities are also being urged to roll out aggressive awareness campaigns to warn potential travelers before they end up in the same mess.

“This is disgraceful. Our nation’s image is being tainted internationally because of the irresponsible behavior of a few,” a concerned official said.

Meanwhile, Asian detention centers continue to fill up with Ugandans, further fueling the scandal and piling pressure on government to act.
