Ugandan Duo Storm Kenya Open Semi Finals

Uganda’s top tennis players Duncan Mugabe and David Oringa have stormed the semi finals of the on-going Kenya Open Championship in Nairobi.

Mugabe, who won the event two years ago, faces a tough test this evening when he takes on Zambia’s Edgar Kaezembe. The Zambian beat Kenya’s Faisal Khan 6-2, 6-1 in one of the quarter final matches played on Thursday evening, while Mugabe beat Rwanda’s Diudonnes Habiyambere 6-0 7-5 in the other quarter final.

Mugabe told our reporter on phone from Nairobi this morning that he is mentality ready to face Kaezembe. He describes the Zambian as a good player, but adds that he is ready for the showdown.

David Oringa will play the 2013 Uganda Open champion Jean Claude Gasigwa from Rwanda in the other semi final. Oringa beat Mathieu Uweziyimana 6-2, 6-1 while Gasigwa labored to a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Oliver Nkunda.

In the women’s category, defending champion Caroline Oduor from Kenya will face first rising Stephanie Mbaya in the first semis, while last year’s finalist Evelyn Otula will play Shuffa Changawa.

Changawa beat Veronica Osogo 6-3,6-2 while Otula saw off Joie Keter 6-4,6-1. The winners of the event will receive 100,000 Kenya shillings, approximately 3.1 million Uganda Shillings.
