A section of National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA) staff on contract are planning to petition President Yoweri Museveni over delayed payments. These claim that they have been working since August 2021 but have never been paid.
The staff claim that they signed agreements indicating that they were supposed to be paid Shs20,000 per day but they have not received even a single coin ever since they started working. Whereas those from Wakiso, Kampala and Mukono districts have come out to bell the cat, even those in other districts are reportedly grumbling silently.
When contacted, NIRA spokesperson Gilbert Kadilo, neither denied nor confirmed knowledge of the staff in question. “Have those people followed up their issue of payment with NIRA? Have they been told they are not going to be paid? At the end of the day, NIRA always pays whoever it contracts. It might take two or three months, but we always pay,” he sarcastically said.
