WATER RELIEF! NWSC Races Against Time To Deliver Katosi–Mutungo Project By November

By Evans Najuna
KAMPALA — The Government of Uganda, through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), is racing to complete the Katosi–Mutungo Water Supply Improvement Project by November 2026, in a move expected to improve water supply reliability and ease pressure on the Muyenga water supply system.
The project is designed to improve water distribution across several parts of Kampala and neighbouring areas by transferring Mutungo’s water demand from the Muyenga supply system to the Katosi network.
Once completed, the project is expected to create additional capacity within the Muyenga system, improving supply reliability for households, businesses and institutions across the affected service areas.
According to project details, the works involve laying approximately 3.8 kilometres of DN600 ductile iron (DI) pipeline from Seeta to Namanve.

The new pipeline is expected to facilitate the transfer of approximately 708 cubic metres of water per hour from the Muyenga system to the Katosi supply network, reducing the load on Muyenga and improving its operational capacity.
The improved capacity and operating levels are expected to benefit dozens of communities across Kampala and neighbouring areas that depend on the existing water distribution network.
Areas expected to benefit include Rubaga, Lungujja, parts of Wakaliga Road, Busega, Natete, Ndebba, Mutundwe, Nalukolongo, Makindye, Salaama Road, Busabala, Mutesa I Road, Sentema Road, Rusaze, Mackay Road, Mbubi Road, Kamanya, Kitinzi, Kibumbiro, Albert Cook, Sekabakintu Road, Gumotoka and Kabuusu.
Other areas expected to benefit include Bulenga, Buloba, Bulaga, Wotansimbi, Bukasa, Buyala, Kyebando, Gganda-Nasere, Kamu-Kamu, Bujjuko, Kawoko, Gombe-Kitasa, Naluvule, parts of Ssenge, Kabulengwa, Kireka-Biira, Nakabugo, Kigoma and Kayunga.
Beyond easing pressure on the Muyenga system, the project is expected to enhance operational flexibility between the Katosi and Ggaba water supply systems, allowing for more effective management and distribution of water across the network.
The November 2026 deadline marks a key milestone in the Government’s efforts to strengthen water infrastructure and improve the reliability of supply in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
Upon completion, the project is expected to increase system capacity and provide greater supply flexibility, helping NWSC improve service reliability for customers in the targeted areas.
