Western region takes lions’ share of national cake – study
A new study by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has revealed that the western region of Uganda takes the lion’s share of top government jobs.
The report, which was unveiled on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at the Sheraton Hotel, revealed that the region has a 47% occupancy of top government jobs and is followed by the northern region at 20%, the central region at 18%, and the eastern region at 15%.
The report, however, also revealed that the central region dominates public service if one is to look at overall employment by region. The regions’ overall employment in public service stands at 31%, the western region at 25%, the northern region at 19%, and the eastern region at 24%.
Despite having a huge working population (23.5 million), according to the report, the country still grapples with unemployment. Only 18.3 million people have been able to find work, leaving about 5.2 million people unemployed.
The report also highlighted employment by sex, revealing that the male sex still dominates in public service employment with 66%, compared to 34% of women who have been able to find employment in public service.
On political representation, both the eastern and western regions, according to the report, are the most represented, with 27.2% and 27% members of parliament, respectively. Both central and northern stand at 21.9% and 23.9%, respectively.
Compared to previous years, Uganda today has more women political representatives, with 38% in the 11th parliament, which is higher compared to previous parliaments.
