Kampala – SP. Jackson Mucunguzi, a senior police officer is apparently shaking tables at Uganda’s oldest university after coming out to contest for the Makerere University convocation chairmanship.

According to Mucunguzi, he’s ready to take the mantle as an alumnus, and now a PhD student at the same university.

He has three post graduate degrees from Costa Rica, Uganda Christian University and UMI where he is a member of alumni association representing Kampala and beyond.

He further said he is experienced with university’s politics having been a GRC of Lumumba Hall, guild security, minister 2008/2009 and head of security for seven years as an O/C as well as a chief security officer at the same university.

Mucunguzi also headed the surrounding areas as DPC Wandegeya Police in-charge of the community policing division.

Speaking with our reporter, Mucunguzi said that, the ivory tower is currently suffocating with a lot of challenges that he wants to solve immediately he’s elected as the chairman.

Among these include; the current poor communication gaps between convocation and other stakeholders especially between students and the alumni association.

There are also allegations of the impact of convocation to its members where there are fewer mobilizations. Mucunguzi noted that there is poor representation of government and university management at the ivory tower.

In his campaign agenda, Mucunguzi says once elected, he will immediately start by popularizing the convocation at national and international platforms, mobilization of members wherever they are to raise funds and other supporting efforts to better Makerere University and implementing the constitution of the convocation, in addition to laying strategies for making the convocation great by engaging all stakeholders.

Currently SP Mucunguzi is, the head of doctrine development unit in the Uganda Police Force (UPF), under the department of curriculum development directorate of human resource development/training which is headed by Gen. Geoffrey Golooba as director.

Previously, he was an O/C and later chief security officer, Makerere University between 2013-2017, and then in 2015 served as a division Police commander at Wandegeya Police station, thereafter to Jinja road in 2018 before joining HRD (Curriculum & Doctrine Development) among others.

Mucunguzi is known for controlling various violent strikes at the university. He also used to represent Gen. Kale Kayihura in meetings with H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who is a visitor at the university. He is popular with past guild regimes of Rutaro Robert, Okware Robert, Onekalit, MP Adeke Ann Abaju, Bwowe Ivan, MP Abber Lilian, Bala and Roy Sembogga, among others.
