Uganda Cranes’ CECAFA Tusker cup first choice goal keeper Abel Dhaira will not take part in the tournament again after he picked an injury on Saturday.

The custodian who was named as Uganda’s first choice for the showpiece cracked his jaw as Uganda cranes took on Kenya Harambee stars and was stretched off in the 58th minute. Uganda went on to win the game 1 – 0.

Voted goal keeper of the year for his iceland based club IBV FC, Dhaira collided with Kenya’s striker Ramah Salim and Ugandan defenders Henry Kalungi and Isaac Isinde before being rushed to Mulago hospital where he received treatment.

He was discharged on Saturday and advised by physicians to take a two week break. By the end of the two weeks, the tournament will have ended meaning he will not take part in the tournament again.

The Cranes camp has since released a statement confirming this development saying “Cranes goalkeeper ruled out of this year’s CECAFA with a suspected cracked jaw. Medics have advised him to take a two week break”.

This is the second time in Abel Dhaira has had an injury rule him out of the CECAFA tournament. The first was in 2008.

Hamza Muwonge who plies his trade with Vipers FC will now assume the first choice’s role as the country’s goal keeper.
