Alupo To Meet M7 Over USL - FUFA Wrangles

Education and Sports Minister Jessica Alupo has warned that her ministry will take a decision this week on the current football squabbles irrespective of the consequences.

Alupo announced last December that Uganda should have one football league by January 31, and has now told Uganda Radio Network that they are hoping to consult with President Yoweri Museveni for advice on the current issues.

For the last four months, the country has two football leagues, the FUFA Super League run by the national Federation, and the Uganda Super League which is managed by the Uganda Super league Limited (USLL). Each of the leagues claims to be the right one. Interestingly, the USLL League under Kavuma Kabenge has sponsorship of over one million dollars through SuperSport and Uganda Breweries Ltd, while the FUFA Super League is struggling with no sponsor.

Alupo explained that she is disappointed that some people in football are very selfish and have bad motives for the sport.

The Minister explained that because of the squabbles in football with the existence of two leagues, Uganda has become a laughing stock around the region. She described it as a small matter which can be solved so easily, but that some parties decided to make things so hard.

However, if the Minister decides that the USLL League should remain in place since they have sponsors, then the world Football body FIFA is likely to interpret it as government interference and therefore effect a temporary ban.
