What was supposed to be a routine hotel stay turned into a real-life horror movie after a commercial pilot woke up to a swarm of bats flying around his hotel room—only to discover later that one had bitten him.

The California pilot is now suing Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, claiming the terrifying encounter left him with medical bills exceeding $100,000 (about Shs370 million) after undergoing emergency rabies treatment.

According to the lawsuit, the 46-year-old pilot had checked into the hotel on August 29 while attending work-related training when he was jolted awake at around 2:30am by bats circling inside his room.

Hotel maintenance staff reportedly removed some of the bats but allegedly failed to move him to another room.

The lawsuit claims the pilot noticed a hole around the room’s air-conditioning unit, which he believes allowed the bats to enter. He stuffed the opening with a towel before trying to get back to sleep.

When he woke up later, another bat was still hiding behind the curtains.

Animal control officers removed the final bat and warned him that several bats in the area had recently tested positive for rabies, urging him to seek treatment immediately.

It was then that the pilot noticed a bite mark on his foot.

Doctors immediately placed him on an intensive course of rabies injections, leaving him with medical bills of more than $100,000.

The lawsuit says the frightening ordeal left the married father constantly fearing he had contracted the deadly virus and worrying that he could die and leave his wife to raise their child alone.

His lawyer says the trauma has continued long after the incident, with the pilot now struggling to sleep in hotel rooms—an especially difficult challenge given his career requires frequent overnight stays.

The suit further claims that settlement talks with Sheraton’s parent company, Marriott International, failed after the company allegedly offered what the pilot considered an inadequate settlement.

The pilot is seeking compensation for his medical expenses and the emotional distress caused by the bizarre hotel nightmare.

The incident has sparked fresh concerns over hotel maintenance and guest safety after one of the world’s biggest hotel brands found itself at the centre of an extraordinary bat invasion lawsuit.
