Belgian Tactician Expresses Interest In Cranes’ Job

Tom Saintfiet, a Belgian tactician has expressed interest in the vacant position of the Uganda Cranes head coach. The position fell vacant on Monday this week after the Federation of Uganda Football Association – FUFA fired Bobby Williamson.

Saintfiet, who was for two and a half years, national coach of Namibia and has had stints as coach of Ethiopia and Yemen believes that, he has what it takes to lead the Cranes to unlikely glory. He told URN on Tuesday evening that, he has followed the Uganda Cranes for many years, adding that it is one of the most exciting teams in the region.

He says the Cranes players have so much potential. Saintfiet says that while coaching Ethiopia, he saw the cranes play Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, with a player from his team. Saintfiet said Uganda has not been able to make it to major competitions in recent years, because the team was just “unlucky”. He disclosed that his representative has spoken to the FUFA leadership led Lawrence and they will be seeking an appointment to see him very soon.

Saintfiet holds the highest coaching licence in football, the UEFA Pro Licence, and has 17 years coaching experience despite his relative young age. He is 40-years-old. He was appointed Technical Director of Nigeria last year but didn’t assume office because of infighting. Rogers Mulindwa, the FUFA Head of Communication declined to comment on the development, and instead asked our reporter to wait and see what happens in the next few days
