Erias Lukwago, the embattled Kampala city Lord Mayor and Col Kizza Besigye, the former FDC president who are still being held in police custody at Kiira and Jinja road police stations respectively face charges of inciting violence, according to Andrew Felix Kawesi, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander.

Lukwago and Besigye were picked up on Tuesday and taken to Nagalama police station. Lukwago was intercepted by police while leaving his home to appear at Kibuli Police headquarters while Besigye was picked up from Ben Kiwanuka street where he was greeting his supporters after beating tight security at his home in Kasangati, a Kampala suburb.

Kaweesi who was speaking to local media yesterday however, didn’t explain whether the duo will appear before court as he was rushing for a senior police management meeting.

Trouble for Lukwago started last week after he announced plans to address various rallies in the city to explain his position on the KCCA tribunal report, which implicated him for alleged incompetence, abuse of office and misconduct.

Betty Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality MP wrote notifying police about the rallies. However, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, said the letter didn’t meet the conditions listed down in the Public Order management law. As a result, Kaweesi warned the organizers of the rally to call it off. However, Lukwago and his allies vowed to go ahead with the rally leading to their arrest.
