Defence minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga says they are many negative forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) regrouping to destabilize the prevailing peace in Uganda and South Sudan.

Kiyonga says Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) under the command of late Brigadier Kankiriho had flushed out ADF rebels from Ruwenzori region. These rebels fled into DRC where they are regrouping and it had been Kankiriho’s mission to repulse any attempts to re-enter Ugandan territory.

Speaking during the burial ceremony in Bulimbi village in Rushere town council in Kiruhura district, Kiyonga said Congo is a safe haven for so many negative forces that are destabilizing peace in the entire region.

Minister Kiyonga says unless such forces are eliminated, Uganda will never attain total peace and called upon the army to make sure that late Kankiriho’s strategic plan and vision is realised.

Kiyonga hailed the late Kankiriho for dedicating his entire life to serving the nation and army to the extent that he forgot to take time off for medical care.

The Chief of Defence Forces Aronda Nyakairima said the death of brigadier Kankiriho is a big blow to the army because it will be hard to find someone with his character as a commander.

Aronda says Kankiriho was instrumental in the army’s success in defeating the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels and the disarmament process in Karamoja. He pledged that the UPDF will continue to support the children of late Kankiriho.

Kankiriho who died of multiple of organ failure in Nakasero Hospital survived by a widow Deborah Kankiriho and four children.
