City businessman Hajji Hassan Bulwadda, the proprietor of Bulwadda Properties, a real estate agency, has come out to bail out some of the people who were evicted from Lubigi Wetland starting last week.
Hajji Bulwadda announced on Wednesday that he had decided to donate five (5) acres of land to families that were evicted by the National Environment and Management Authority (NEMA), in which they will set up homes and start up a new life.
The land that Hajji Bulwadda donated to the evicted families is located in Kikandwa Sub-county Kizigo-Matte village, Busunju, in Mityana District, off Hoima Road, and is part of his vast Bulwadda village estate that measures close to 300 acres.
“It is important to note that I am not giving these people land because of political reasons or because I am so rich but as a human being I know that people need where to stay, children need homes to grow up in or else they will go to the streets,” Bulwadda said while handing over the land.
He added that despite the fact that he subscribes to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), this is a matter that is beyond politics and urged whoever is willing to help the evicted families not to politicize it.
We have established that Hajji Bulwadda has since tasked all people who want to benefit from the donation to present to his company land sale agreements they obtained when they bought land in Lubigi Wetland as the criteria for them to be given new land on his estate.
To emphasize the seriousness of the matter, Hajji Bulwadda hired taxis that ferried some of the evicted families to Busunju to inspect the said land that he donated to them.
Bulwadda, who was flanked by the Nansana Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Shaffic Nsubuga and other local leaders, however implored other businessmen to come out and rescue other affected people who were evicted from Lubigi Wetland, saying that he is doing this for humanitarian reasons.
On June 14th, 2024, NEMA together with operatives from the KCCA and Uganda Police evicted over 1,000 people from the Lubigi Wetland in Wakiso District.
The operation, which affected mainly low income earners, left many families, including women and children, homeless and vulnerable.
However, officials from NEMA said that the evictions aim to address environmental degradation, although they have created significant social repercussions and left many people displaced.
