The Electoral Commission on Tuesday officially closed the two day nomination exercise for candidates for the Butaleja Woman Parliamentary by-election.

Five candidates were nominated in total for the seat that fell vacant following the death of Cerinah Nebanda mid last month.

The nominated candidates include; Betty Hamba (Independent), Felista Namwihiri (FDC) and Perusi Munaba (Independent) who were nominated on Monday while Florence Nebanda Andiru (NRM) and Sarah Annet Logose (Independent) were nominated on Tuesday.

Florence Andiru Nebanda is a sister to the fallen Butaleja Member of Parliament.

According to Joseph Biribonwa, the deputy Electoral Commission chairperson, the commission plans to meet the candidates to ensure the campaign programme goes on without any hiccups. The campaigns will run until February 9 and election day is February 11.

“We completed the update of the voters’ register. The current register has 92,922 people. It’s now up to the electorate to vet this register and ensure that all the people therein are eligible voters,” Biribonwa said.

Florence Nebanda Andiru is viewed by many political pundits as the favorite to win the poll.
