Professor Mondo Kagonyera, the Makerere University Chancellor has called for disciplinary action against ineffectual university officials.

He revealed this while presiding over the graduation of 3,676 students from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences on the opening day of the 63rd graduation ceremony,

He said failure by staff to deliver unpleasantly affected students.

Professor Kagonyera referred reports in the media regarding failure to achieve certain tasks within the stipulated deadlines.

“Let me, therefore, take this opportunity to ask the University Council and other organs not to shy away from taking disciplinary measures against staff that do not perform their duties.” He said

Thousands of students, particularly from the CHUSS, nearly missed this year’s graduation ceremony after their results were submitted to the University Academic Registrar after the November 9 deadline.

Students were compelled to stage protests and petition the vice chancellor, Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu, who then ordered authentication to make sure that students who met all the requirements were included among those graduating.

However, Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa, the deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs said reports of inefficiency are not a surprise because it is intertwined in the institution’s human resource fabric.

To date, no action has been taken against the academic registrars responsible for the mishap.

A total of 12,555 graduands will graduate during this year’s four-day graduation ceremony. Of these, 47.1% are female and 52.9% are male.

The university is awarding 61 PhDs this year, majority (82%) of which, are male.
